Fed Uni Dutsina Ma Seeks Establishment Of  Arbitration Centers By Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

 A Communique issued by the expanded management committee of Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina State at its 3rd Retreat in Kaduna, has reiterated the need for tertiary institutions in the country to establish arbitration centers to minimize litigations.

The retreat which was declared open by Kaduna State Governor, Senator  Uba Sani, emphasized that, University Managements should be observing the Principles of natural Justice, equity and fairness in handling staff and students disciplinary cases.

 Jointly, signed by Chairman and Secretary of the Communique drafting committee, Professor Mohammed Umar Sanda and Mubarak Auwalu Yakasai Esq, the communique said the objective of the retreat was to refresh the minds of the members of the University Management Committee and to update them on contemporary issues for effective and efficient management of the University. 

According to the communique, five (5) papers were presented by erudite scholars on: ”Managing a Tertiary Institution in an Era of Multiple Challenges: Fuel Subsidy Removal, Fluctuating Exchange Rate and Spiraling Inflation,” “Towards a Harmonious Working Relationships Between University Management and In-House Unions,” “Imperatives of Compliance with the Code of Conduct For Public Officers By the Staff of Nigerian Universities,” “How Nigerian Tertiary Institutions can Tackle the Spate of Internal and External Litigations” and “Strategies for Maximizing Internally Generated Revenue in Tertiary Institutions Amidst Shrinking Budgets.”

Other part of the resolutions made during the retreat, the communique said that, tertiary institutions should also diversify their revenue streams through proactive planning, financial prudence and strategic partnerships.

 “Government should increase funding of education especially at tertiary level for effective teaching, learning and research,” it said.

Similarly, the communique explained that, tertiary institutions should endeavor to attract research grants through collaborations, robust research and patency with companies and other organizations.

 It said “University Managements should ensure effective communication with In-house Unions for sustaining good working environment.”

 The communique observed that,  “In-House Unions should be conversant with the relevant laws, rules and regulations governing the administration of Universities for harmonious working relationships.

University Managements should sensitize their staff on the need to comply with the provisions of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) Act.” 

 Accordingly, the communique said Universities should leverage on their Alumni, Endowment Fund, Consultancy Services and Public Private Partnership to boost their internally generated revenue.
